Malvern Dental Practice Gearing up for Elvis Presley Event to Raise Awareness of Mouth Cancer

A dental practice in Malvern is gearing up for a one-off Elvis Presley event to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

Beacon Dental Care is one of just a few practices across the UK to take temporary charge of one of Elvis Presley’s crowned teeth; the tooth will be displayed for patients to see, before moving on to another practice in the UK. The unusual piece of memorabilia belongs to a Canadian dentist named Michael Zuk, who has offered to enable patients across the country to see the tooth in a bid to try and raise awareness of oral cancer.

For one day only, on Wednesday 30th April, the staff and patients will be dressing up and getting into the spirit of the 1950’s. Elvis hits will be played in the waiting room and the practice will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the music legend’s first smash hit, That’s All Right.

The Elvis Day is set to be great fun, but there is a very serious message. Oral cancer affects more than 6,000 people in the UK every year and studies show that the disease has become more prevalent over the course of the last decade. Worryingly, survival rates have shown little sign of improvement and this is largely due to the fact that many cases are diagnosed when cancer has already reached an advanced stage and there is a high risk that cancerous cells have spread to other parts of the body.

Raising awareness of mouth cancer will hopefully inform people about the signs and causes, which will increase the chances of spotting symptoms early and boost survival hopes.

Dr Karen Sutton, a dentist at the practice, confirmed that free oral cancer screening will be available on the day and encouraged as many people as possible to support the events taking place around the UK.
