I have an underbite and have been recommended a pretty extreme procedure, do I have any other options?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

I have grade 3 malocclusion and underbite. I am 32 years of age and have recently had a consultation with Oral Maxillo Facial Surgeon who advised a Bilateral maxillary osteotomy.
It appears a pretty extreme operation and quite frankly I’m scared of having it.
What non- surgical alternatives are there which I could try? I’m seeing another dentist who does orthodontics next week and would like to know what I should be asking him as I really want to sort my underbite out as it causes discomfort and I have a crossbite at the back on the left where my teeth catch and grind.

Hi i’ve been told I need surgery to align my jaw but will need to wear braces for two years prior to this, are the braces necessary?

Q.

hi, my jaw is not correctly defined as my bottom jaw is alot backwards making my top teeth look like theu stick out, i have been advised as a teenager that i would need my bottom jaw straightened through surgery to allign me top and bottom teeth to correct my bite, but before this procedure can be done they are (nhs dental hospital) advising me to have braces for around 2 years to straighten my teeth, what my question is then is that, would i need to use the 2 year braces to allign them or could i use a more modern method by which i mean quicker method and then have the surgery?

Would I be able to get all the dental work to fix my jaw alignment done under general anaesthetic?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
Q.

Hi,
I am interested in looking into cosmetic dentistry. I was offered a brace to correct my overbite when i was younger i wasnt ready at the time for the procedure. This was becasue after x-raying me they found that ~I would need to have an opperation to break my jaw to realign my over bite as my jaw bone bite has moved forward. I would also need a brace to strightne my teeth. Would i be able to have this whole procedure inculding all dental work where teeth made need to be removed for a brace under general anesthtic? Is this a procdure that your practice could offer to me? Many thanks

I still have an open bite even though I have had braces since I was 9. What do you recommend?

Q.

I have had braces and orthodontic work for 7 years, since I was 9, and I still have a pronounced open bite; the back teeth of my bottom jaw meet but my front teeth protrude, I now feel like the orthodontic work is doing nothing to solve this. What steps do you recommend I now take?

I have a reverse overbit and need it corrected. Can I do it on the NHS?

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
Q.

I am turning 18 this summer and starting university away from home this year.
I have a reverse overbite and have previously had braces, however my teeth have relapsed from a period without retainers.
I feel my bite has changed, as I now find it difficult to close my mouth without catching my cheeks in the process and find that my speech has changed as a result.

As a prospective medical student, I feel this will damage my confidence, especially when communicating with my patients and also personally.

I have researched the proceedures available and am aware and prepared for the commitment and post-operative care.
Do you think I am a suitable candidate for corrective surgery, who would I need to talk to, how long will the treatment take and would it be available to me on the NHS?

Thankyou Very much for your time!

Are train track braces the best option to move my teeth forward, and is surgery the only way to correct lower jaw alignment?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010
Q.
I am 24 years old and I want to straighten my bottom teeth as they have been pushed back from sucking my thumb as a child. My top teeth are fine. I had an intial consultation with an orthodontists who has informed me i will need train tracks braces for approximately 6-12 months as other braces are not suitable for the type of movement needed. I have been quoted between £3500 and £4000 plus another £400 for inital x-rays and pictures to determine exact tretment needed. Is this price about right? i was thinking it would be more like £2500 all in so was wondering whether to pay for a second consoltation elsewhere? (i live in south of England- Southampton area). Could you give me an indication of price (i know cases vary)? Also he said my lower jaw has slightly moved back and to get a perfect alignement this would need to be corrected- is surgery the only method? if it is i am not interested in having this done.,
