My dentist says bridges may cause infection is this true?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q.
My regular dentist does not agree with brdges—he says they put more strain on the surrounding teeth and should infection occur then the whole bridge mudt be destroyed to eliminate the infection. I have a tooth missing which can only be rectfied by a bridge –which other dentists seem happy to provide—should I go for this??

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Q.
I have had a root filling and a gold cap put over the tooth. The tooth keeps getting infected and it may be better to have it out. I have a 5 tooth bridge one tooth away form from the cap and if nothing is replaced it could undermine the bridge. Ive been told that a good option is to have an implant but the cost is 2,000 which i cannot afford can it be done chaeper or have you got any suggestions?

My second root canal has gone horribly wrong

Monday, November 9th, 2009
Q.
I had a root canal done on a mandibular 2nd molar 5 days ago, was already being treated with antibiotic as a precaution. After the novacaine wore off I was in a great deal of pain. Took vicodin and antibiotic as prescribed, called the dentist the following morning. He switched my antibiotic to a stonger one and said he would see me next week. I was awake all night tat night again in pain, called his emergency number, now accompanied by swelling an an inability to eat due to pain. He returned my call suggesting that I make an appt after the wknd was over to come in to have the tooth extracted. I am 44 years old, female, in good health. This is my second root canal and experienced nothing like this with my last one. Even the exterior of my face is painful when touched. Any suggestions on what has gone wrong or what I should do?

Infected front tooth is drilled and treatment is causing lot of pain

Friday, November 6th, 2009
Q.
I have been suffering wit a dead front tooth (top) for over a month. The dentist has drilled a hole in the back of the tooth, and initially left the tooth open in order for the bacteria to be killed off by the oxygen. This alleviated the pain initially. The tooth was then padded with soaked disinfectant on cotton wool. Following this after a week or so the tooth was repacked but left open. After the following week the tooth was packed with cotton wool and then sealed with a temporary filling. This felt ok for a while and then the pain was too great and so I removed the temporary filling and the padding and left the tooth open. This alleviated the pain once more. The tooth has now been packed again and sealed over with a temp filling and the pain at this point is quite bad with pain now at the gum and painful to pressure. Should I leave the filling in place or remove it and let the air in again? Is there a better method, this all seems a little ludicrous for this day and age!!!

Can infected implant be treated?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Q.
My question is this, I had an inplant put in next to a 3part bridge. Unfortunately it did’t tak. A few months later we tried agasin, and again it didn’t take. As the second implant was being put in, I could feel my brain rattling and that is no exageration. I left the office and my whole right side of my face swelled up, to the point that I stayed in my bedroom for 3-4 days in the dark. I was on antibiotics and pain meds, but nothing helped. My doctor came in on a sun to see me and I didn’t have parmacy coverage so he gave me a left over antibiotic from his sons. Now my bride was damaged and cracked, and I had to have my teeth pulled due to such infection under bridge. Also my implant on left side is abcessed. What should I do?

When does the gum become tender and white?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Q.
I have had one place on my lower front tooth that has been receded for 10+ years. When I first noticed it I started using the Sonicare toothbrush and have used one twice a day since that time. I have obviously purchased new ones over the years, and do not let the head of toothbrush get old and frayed. My overall dental health is excellent, my gums do not bleed when brushing or flossing. Recently (approximately two weeks ago) I noticed the gum area below the tooth was very tender and when I looked, I saw that it was extremely white all around the base of the tooth. I had been using one of those peroxide whitening mouth rinses once a day for about one year. I thought it may have been related so I stopped using it. Since then the area is still very white, with no pain (unless I mess with it.) The gumline below the white area is somewhat more red in color that the rest of my gumline, but again no tenderness or pain. I do not smoke, have never chewed (I am a female)I drink about 3-4 cups of coffee per week. I take a blood pressure med once a day and am 51 yrs. old. Should I be concerned and see a dentist or am I being an alarmist?
