Why do the NHS only fix gold crowns and caps?

Q. Hi can u pls tell me why nhs only fit gold crowns and caps and what are they made of. and why is it so expensive to have a white crown/cap. thanks,
A. You’ll need to discuss this with your dentist as although they are more expensive to make they should be still available for some teeth on the NHS

My gold crown fell out and my dentist was intent on fitting a new ‘silver’ crown. I quueried this and the dentist said that they no longer do gold crowns on the NHS. I pointed out that with an existing gold crown on another tooth this would look odd. I declined the silver crown until I made enquiries.

Is what the dentist said true?

Thanks
