If you’re eager to improve your dental health and you’re already doing a top job with your cleaning regime, making changes to your diet could be the solution.

We tend to prioritise dental hygiene when it comes to looking after our teeth and gums, but it’s not just cleaning and flossing that make a difference. It’s also very important to pay attention to what you eat. Australian dentist, Dr Steven Lin, said that people don’t tend to link nutrition with dental health, as much as they would with weight loss or general nutrition. The truth is that what you eat has a major impact on your oral health.

Dr Lin explains that brushing your teeth isn’t enough to keep cavities at bay and advises including and excluding certain foods in your diet to make a positive difference to your dental health. On the ‘good’ list, you’ll find foods such as butter, soft cheese and salami, while it pays to avoid foods high in artificial sugars. Dr Lin advises patients to take note of the nutritional value of the foods they eat and recommends foods that are high in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, K2 and E. Examples include fish, milk, eggs, mushrooms, liver, spinach, nuts and broccoli.
