Two people have died following a dental dispute in Marseille.

A female dentist working in the centre of the city was shot dead by a 71 year old patient yesterday; the dentist had been treating a patient when the 71 year old man appeared at the practice with two handguns. The man ordered the patient out of the treatment room and then preceded open fire on the female dentist, who was in her 50’s.

The dental clinic was evacuated and police forces were called to the scene after gun shots were heard. The man was shot dead by police special forces after he opened fire on officers and concerns were raised over the safety of two people who had become trapped in the neighbouring room.

A police source said that there had been a dispute between the man and dental practice staff over an unpaid bill totalling 100 Euros.

Marseille is known for gum crime and this latest incident will cast a shadow over the city once again. At least four men have been shot dead as a result of gang-related gun crime this month.
