A survey has revealed that Singaporeans have good oral health habits.

A poll of 400 people revealed that eight out of ten people brush their teeth twice a day and 70 percent of people visit their dentist for a check-up every twelve months. The survey, which was conducted by The Nielsen Company, was commissioned by Colgate-Palmolive and the findings were presented at the launch of National Oral Health Month on Wednesday.

To celebrate the national campaign, Singaporeans will be entitled to free dental check-ups at 300 dental clinics across the country, with examinations also available at supermarkets on the weekend. The month-long campaign is supported by the Singapore Dental Association, the Ministry of Health, the Singapore Dental Health Foundation and the Health Promotion Board.

The theme of this year’s campaign is the health implications of poor oral health, with numerous studies showing a link between poor oral health and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, strokes and complications during pregnancy and labour.

Chief Dental Officer from the Ministry of Health, Patrick Tseng, added that a national survey will be conducted next year to determine oral health habits.
