Study Shows MRSA is Common Among Dental Students

A study has revealed that MRSA is common among dental students.

The study, which was carried out in Seattle, showed that rates of MRSA were significantly higher in dental students than in the general population. The study involved students from the University of Washington Dental School and the results showed that 1 in 5 students tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. 4 out of the 7 dental clinics at the school also tested positive for the strain of bacteria, after swabs were taken from dental chairs and floors in the buildings.

Although the rates are considerably higher than the general population, a spokesperson from the CDC said that there was no reason for members of the public to be alarmed or panicked. Arjun Srinivasan, assistant director for the CDC’s Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Program, said that the high reading was unlikely to be indicative of dental offices across the country and people should not be worried about going to see their dentist.
