A dental surgeon and passionate oral health campaigner from Sheffield has plenty to smile about after being crowned Mrs UK India. Dr Gullu Kuchhal beat off tough competition to claim the crown in her first ever beauty pageant.

The 37-year-old dental surgeon said that she was delighted to scoop the award and she is now hoping to use the platform to raise awareness of oral health issues and to help more people give up smoking.

Gullu has been campaigning for many years, and she started trying to make a difference before moving to the UK from India to study dentistry in 2005. For the last three years, Gullu has been combining her dental work with modelling. She has a husband and a 5-year-old daughter.

After claiming the title, Gullu now has plans to go out to India in the coming weeks and continue her oral health campaign work. Her aim is to encourage people to make healthy lifestyle choices and to get the most out of life. Gullu said that her family had influenced her growing up and during her childhood, she moved around a lot, meeting new people and gaining an appreciation for the range of opportunities available. Although Gullu has worked hard to pursue her dreams of a career in dentistry, she enjoys modelling and is grateful for the options open to her to broaden her horizons. The married Indian category was a new addition to the pageant, and it appealed to Gullu because it encourages women to do something different. Preparations for the event were intense, according to Gullu, but the hard work was all worthwhile.
