A new dental academy in Portsmouth had its turf cutting ceremony this week ahead of developments for a practice specifically for final year dental students.
King’s College London Dental Institute will get the opportunity to work with dental hygiene and therapy students in the provision of primary dental care in and around Portsmouth
Scheduled to open next year, the Academy is an innovative partnership between King’s College London Dental Institute and the University of Portsmouth with funding support from the NHS.
Past president of the British Dental Association and of the General Dental Council, Dame Margaret Seward, cut the first turf on the proposed plot of land.
This marked an exciting phrase in the Dental Academy initiative, following three and a half years of planning, to date the construction of the new Academy building is on schedule and in budget.
Dr David Radford, who is soon to take up post as the King’s director of Clinical Studies at Portsmouth Dental Academy, said: “The Portsmouth Dental Academy is an exciting opportunity for half our final year students to be fortunate enough to study alongside other members of the dental team.
“For the first time, they’ll receive instruction and gain firsthand experience in leading a dental team in the provision of primary care dentistry.”
The opportunity is said to enhance the students’ opportunity to obtain the best choice of jobs in vocational and foundation training, but vitally it will promote their understanding of the value of the team in integrated dental care.
Dr David Ranford said: “This combined with working in a brand new facility in the heart of the Portsmouth docklands redevelopment means the year five students in 2010 will be highly privileged pioneers in dental education in the UK.”
