Police are gathering evidence after it was alleged that a dental professor was sexually harassing his students.

Police are now questioning the victims and collecting statements at the Jamnagar Dental College in Ahmedabad, India. Over the weekend, officers visited the girl’s hostel to interview students and compile written statements.

The incident was reported on Thursday last week and it is believed that a number of female students have complained about their professor’s, accusing him of sexual harassment and indecent behaviour; the professor in question took charge of their first year viva examination last week. The dean of the school, Anal Bhatt, has so far made no comment and students say they have had little support from staff at the college. One of the students said they had been asked to state that the college had been very helpful and cooperative with the investigations, despite the fact that the girls have had no support from staff.

The professor involved in the incident has denied the allegations, insisting that he was trying to teach students about biochemistry; the professor said the students knowledge of biochemistry was very poor and he needed to ask potentially probing questions to ensure the students had all the information they needed to progress with their studies. The professor said that he had written a letter of apology because he had been pressured into doing so by the dean of the college.
