Plymouth University Launches New Dental Social Enterprise

Plymouth University has become the first education provider to launch a clinical-based social enterprise.

The Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise will join the dental school with the community and further increase the influence of the hugely successful dental school within the local community.

The university already works with the NHS to provide dental care to local residents and the social enterprise will focus on oral health education, research, training and teaching and engaging with the community. The university is actively involved in helping the NHS to break down potential barriers to access to NHS care and the team works with prisons and rehabilitation centres, hospitals and nursing homes to try and make care accessible in the local area.

Professor Rob Sneyd, Dean of Plymouth University Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, said that the new social enterprise will enable the university to build on its excellent track record and to reach out to more people in the region. Professor Sneyd said that the venture represented “commitment to outstanding clinical education, strong social and community engagement and world class research.”
