Plans For a New Dental Surgery in Clydach Turned Down

Plans to create a new dental surgery in Clydach, Wales, have been rejected following objections from local residents.

Dr Ian Smillie handed over a planning application to build a new dental practice on the land at the back of his existing practice on Vardre Road and the new site was located near to the community centre.

Some residents welcomed the plans, which would have created more dental places in the area, but many objected. The main reasons cited by residents who wanted the application to be turned down included the size of the building, which many believed was too big and the location, as many felt that the surgery would be too near to neighbouring homes.

Residents produced petitions in favour and against the plans; on total, the petition objecting to the proposals gained 149 votes, in comparison with the petition supporting the plans, which attracted almost 400 signatures.

Sarah Beynon, speaking in support of the application, said that there was a need to meet the demand for modern healthcare services. Nigel Bell, one of the councillors considering the plans, said that the building was too big and would encroach on the local residential area.

Clydach councillor, Paulette Smith, said that there was a desperate need for more dental surgeries in the area, but the proposed site was unsuitable because it was in a residential area.
