Oakham dental practice is doing its bit to raise awareness of mouth cancer this November

Members of staff at an Oakham dental practice have been busy putting together a series of events to try and raise awareness of mouth cancer this November.

The mydentist team launched their month-long campaign to support Mouth Cancer Action Month with a free evening screening session at the beginning of the month and this was followed by a cake sale the week after. To drum up interest and encourage people to donate to charity and be more mouth aware, the team also dressed in blue.

Dentists and nurses are also running a raffle with a brand new electric toothbrush up for grabs and patients are also being actively encouraged to make appointments this month.

The mydentist team is supporting Mouth Cancer Action Month, an annual campaign that is run by the Oral Health Foundation. Oral health educator, Emma Clithero, said that everyone thought it would be an excellent idea to get the community involved in the campaign and to try and engage as many people as possible. Mouth cancer has a low media profile and research suggests that only a quarter of the population actually knows it exists. Raising awareness educates people about the causes and symptoms and campaigns like Mouth Cancer Action Month will hopefully ensure that many more cases are diagnosed at an early stage when treatment is more likely to be successful.
