NHS Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes have confirmed that additional funding from the Department of Health will be used to reduce waiting lists.

At the moment the waiting time for orthodontic treatment is around 13 months and the people on the list are under the age of 18 years old. A spokesman for NHS Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes said the money will benefit children in the region and that health bosses are hoping to reduce the waiting time from 13 months to 6 months.

Funding will also be used to allow more patients to register with an NHS dentist in the region and health bosses are hoping to encourage 15,000 new patients to attend a dental check-up in the next 12 months. Money will be used to extend opening hours and recruit new dentists.

The trust has received £2.7 million as part of a national investment of £30 million set aside to improve dental health services.

Diane Fenton, head of dentistry and optometry at NHS Northamptonshire, said that last year the trust was able to attract 12,000 new patients and that the money they have received this year will be used to encourage more people to sign up with a dentist and reduce waiting lists for orthodontic treatment.
