A new dental hospital, which is planned for the former BBC Pebble Mill site, could be the first step towards a state of the art medical park in Birmingham.

Plans for the new dental hospital have received initial backing and are expected to get full permission from city planners in the near future. The hospital would treat more than 100,000 patients each year, according to a supporting statement, which was submitted to Birmingham City Council’s planning committee on December 6th. The hospital would also create 450 jobs and provide first class training facilities for 670 students.

The new hospital, which is due to be built on the former BBC Pebble Mill site in the Edgbaston area of the city, would replace the existing dental hospital, which is located next to the Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the city centre; the hospital has been used by students at the university for more than 50 years.

If plans for the dental hospital are approved as expected, they could mark the start of the establishment of a new medical park and ‘life sciences’ area of the city. Future plans for the area include private hospitals and other health facilities.

The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry would be the first stand alone hospital and dental school to be built in the UK since the 1970’s and would provide excellent facilities for patients, students and staff.

Medical director, Mick Roberts, said that the new hospital would “meet the changing needs of specialist modern dentistry.”
