A dental nurse from Hingham is hoping to take part in a volunteer project in Uganda. Sarah Drew is preparing to join a team of dental professionals to provide dental care to communities in one of Africa’s poorest countries.

Sarah is hoping to be part of a project, which will take place in February 2019. The team is aiming to set up a series of pop-up clinics over the course of a two-week period. The average life expectancy in Uganda is just over 50 years old, and it is very rare for people to be able to access even the most basic dental care. Dentaid is working to deliver treatment to people in need and the team will also be trying to educate the patients they see and provide oral hygiene advice.

Sarah has 20 years of experience as a dental nurse. Having volunteered for Dentaid in the past, Sarah didn’t hesitate to put her name forward when the chance to help out came about again. Sarah said that dental care should be a basic human right, and she didn’t think twice about volunteering again because she saw the difference Dentaid makes during her last trip. People have very little, yet they are so grateful for the treatment they receive. Sarah was overwhelmed by the reception she was given by patients last time, and she is looking forward to using her skills to help others again. She said that the experience was life-changing, both for the patients, but also for the volunteers involved.

To secure her place, Sarah now needs to raise £2,100 and she has already started thinking about fundraising ideas.
