Almost half of the population have spent money on cosmetic dentistry, according to a new poll.

The survey by Orbit Complete in association with the British Dental Heath Foundation (BDHF) revealed that 47 per cent of respondents have splashed out on treatments such as white fillings, with the figure rising to 52 per cent among Londoners.

Cosmetic dentistry patients were found to spend an average of £302 on specialist procedures.

In addition, 80 per cent of dentists polled claim that women look after their teeth better than men.

However, the research also revealed that eight per cent of people never visit the dentist, with expense and fear cited as reasons why.

“Consumers are recognising that dental health is important,” commented Nigel Carter, chief executive of the BDHF. “However, it is still too low down on the health agenda.”

Leigh Greenwood, head of media at the BDHF, recently advised people who cannot find a local NHS dentist to find out all the options available to them.

He recommended dental plans, capitation plans, health plans and maintenance schemes as effective methods of spreading the cost of a private dentist.”ADNFCR-1374-ID-18515032-ADNFCR”
