GDC Issues CPD Reminder for Dentists

Sample News Big

The General Dental Council has issued a reminder for dentists with important deadlines for continuing professional development (CPD) fast approaching.

Around 57,000 dentists registered with the GDC have been sent a form to complete, detailing the number of hours of CPD they have completed. The deadline for the form to be completed and sent back is the 28th August. The GDC also wanted to stress that more than 41,000 dental professionals are reaching the final year of the five year CPD cycle, which means that they must complete 150 hours of CPD by the end of July next year.

Of the 150 hours, 50 hours must be verifiable, meaning that it must have clear educational objectives, goals, outcomes and written proof. CPD is designed to ensure that dentists are up to date with protocol and policy, as well as enabling them to hone their skills and learn about new treatments and techniques.

If dentists fail to comply with GDC guidelines relating to CPD, they risk losing their registration and the GDC will investigate the case in detail.

The GDC is also currently working on a new system for CPD, which could see dentists declaring the number of hours of CPD they have completed every year.
