A female dentist has been charged with taking around a million pounds from the NHS, in a case that has been described as the “biggest ever” NHS fraud case.

Dr Joyce Trail has been suspended after investigations suggested that she had sent more than five thousand fake patient invoices and subsequently claimed huge amounts of money. Dr Trail was arrested following a joint investigation by the NHS Counter Fraud Team and the police.

The dentist has worked at a busy practice in the Handsworth area of Birmingham for the last twelve years; she offers NHS treatment as well as a range of cosmetic dental treatments. Dr Trail has also worked in the community, tending to elderly people. Two years ago, Dr Trail also opened a medical spa, which offers treatments including chemical peels, teeth whitening and Botox.

Dr Trail has now been charged with three counts of fraud and one count of obtaining a bogus money transfer by means of deception. The dentist appeared in court in April and has been released on unconditional bail; she is yet to announce whether she intends to plead guilty or not guilty but she has told local newspapers that she intends to fight hard to clear her name.

Dr Trail has been involved in local community projects and has been hailed by some as a generous, thoughtful and kind individual. She vowed to try and improve the area she works in and has offered her services to the Community Contact Family Centre in the past.

Dr Trail is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on the 18th of June.
