A “drunken thug” has been jailed after a vicious attack on a taxi driver in Leicester; 22 year old Anthony Bott was arrested by police after an appeal for information by the local press.

Bott was jailed for two and a half years after attacking a taxi driver, leaving him with a broken eye socket and extensive dental injuries, which will require around £500 worth of treatment.

Bott was arrested after passengers he had shared the cab home with came forward after seeing an appeal for information in the Leicester Mercury; they had not been with Bott at the time of the attack but the description matched and they came forward and named the attacker.

Mr Bott attacked the taxi driver after he threatened to call the police when he refused to pay the outstanding fare of £9; according to Gary Short, prosecuting, Mr Bott punched the driver twice in the face and then left.

The 53 year old taxi driver was left with facial injuries, including a broken eye socket and ongoing dental injuries, which will cost £500 to resolve.

Judge Simon Hammond praised the local paper and described Mr Bott as a “drunken thug”. He added that taxi drivers perform an important role and they should be able to work without fearing for their safety.
