Dentists issue festive Prosecco warning

As the party season reaches its peak, dentists have issued a warning over the dangers of drinking prosecco. The fizzy drink has become a very popular tipple, and with many celebrating over the next couple of weeks, dentists are keen to do their bit to raise awareness of the impact of drinking prosecco on a regular basis.

Experts estimate that by 2022, Brits will consume 750 million litres of prosecco per year. While there’s nothing wrong with raising a glass and spreading a little Christmas cheer, dentists are keen for people to bear their teeth in mind when selecting seasonal tipples.

In the summer, when prosecco consumption reached record highs, the British Dental Association warned about the dangers of a prosecco smile, and now, with parties in full swing, representatives from the Oral Health Foundation have been sharing some advice. Prosecco is not just damaging for the teeth due to its sugar content. It’s also very acidic, which increases the risk of enamel erosion. Dr Ben Atkins, from the foundation, explained the findings of a trial using several different types of drink. While milk and water boasted a decay risk of 0/10, the score for prosecco was much higher at 6. The worst offenders were energy drinks and cola with a score of 9/10.
