“Dental Care By One” Campaign Launches to Address Children’s Dental Health Problems

With children’s dental health becoming a major health issue, Smile4Life has launched a campaign to get more young children to see the dentist early in their life.

Known by the name “Dental Care by One” or #DCby1, the national framework will be there to encourage parents and guardians to take their children to the dentist before they have their first birthday. It is supported by a number of national dental organisations, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, The British Orthodontic Society, the Faculty of General Dental Practice and the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, who have launched the campaign today at their annual conference in Manchester.

With an increasing number of young children being admitted to hospital for dental extractions, some under general anaesthetic and some involving children as young as two years old, early prevention and intervention is key to good oral health. Providing information will be an important part of prevention and so DCby1 are reaching out to inform parents that baby teeth and dental care is very important in ensuring a smile for life for every child.

With the aim of a “generation” of children with no dental decay at all, the BSPD is hoping to get the support of practices to offer treatment to 0-2 year old patients, and is working with the Office of the Chief Dental Officer to allow practices who have already fulfilled their allocated units of dental activity can be paid for extra young patients they treat.
