Cosmetic dentistry patients 'should seek an orthodontist first'

Cosmetic dentistry patients 'should seek an orthodontist first'Cosmetic dentistry patients should be aware that often a "quick cosmetic fix" is not enough to repair unattractive teeth, it has been claimed.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has warned that often patients need to visit an orthodontist to correct the real underlying problem rather than just covering it up.

"Adults considering cosmetic dental procedures to cover unsightly teeth should consult an orthodontist, who can work with the patient's general dentist and other dental specialists to produce a healthy, beautiful smile," commented William Gaylord, president of AAO.

He advised that often people who are unhappy with the appearance of their smile are suffering from misaligned teeth and that veneers or bonding treatments will not make a difference.

Those treatments can create a beautiful smile following orthodontic work, he added, claiming that people do not need to trade in health for beauty as in today's world, "they can have it all".

According to a Mintel survey, women in their late 40s and early 50s are the most frequent cosmetic dentistry patients.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18462644-ADNFCR
