The Australian Dental Association has praised the work of dental students in Queensland.

Students from Griffith University have been treating Indigenous people in the South Burnett area of the Gold Coast and in recognition of their efforts, the ADA has awarded $5,000 to Hope4Health, a charity founded by the students. The charity provides emergency dental care for residents in Cherbourg, one of the country’s largest Indigenous communities.

Kylie Arnot, a spokesperson for the ADA, said that the money will be used to provide emergency services for the people of Cherbourg; many people have lost a number of teeth and this is increasing their risk of infection, as well as causing problems with speech and the ability to eat certain foods.

Ms Arnot said that there is currently a long waiting list in the town and the work of the students is extremely valuable. The charity is aiming to increase awareness of oral health, as well as providing treatment; members of the team are hoping to educate people about diet and oral hygiene and they hope this will make a difference to future generations.
