Your Morning Cuppa could help Prevent Tooth Decay

Sample News Big

According to a member of the Tea Advisory Panel, a morning cuppa could have health benefits, including antibacterial properties which reduce tooth decay.

Dr Carrie Ruxton said that people have been aware of the antibacterial properties of tea for many years, but the properties have only recently been investigated scientifically.

According to research studies reported by the Tea Advisory Panel, compounds in tea may help to reduce tooth decay, as they can disrupt the action of bacteria in the mouth. The compounds, known as flavonoids, prevent the action of bacteria and can also prevent the formation of dental plaque because they block the breakdown of starch.

The studies show that drinking tea may help to reduce the risk of tooth decay, however, oral hygiene is always the most important way of preventing oral health problems. A good daily oral hygiene routine should include brushing the teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and using mouthwash and dental floss on a regular basis. It is also important to see a dentist for a routine check-up every six to twelve months.
