Yorkshire Dentist Trains Tanzanian Workforce

High demand for a qualified dental workforce has led a Dentist from Yorkshire to travel to Tanzania to train prospective workers.

Sponsored by Bridge2Aid, dentist Gwyneth Morris, a volunteer, has journeyed to Tanzania as a member of a current project dedicated to building knowledge of dentistry practices in regions of the world where the need for quality treatment outweighs current supply. Many patients in Tanzania go unchecked for years with the ongoing lack of resources.

UK based dentists are invited by the charity to share their knowledge base and skills with budding dental workers in the Tanzanian district of Karagwe.

Even after spending two and a half weeks in the region, Dr Morris recognised the need for trainees to quickly assimilate knowledge to halt a growing problem which in certain cases such as the spread of dental abscesses can prove fatal. Outbreaks can happen through mouth to mouth contact and provide just one type of conundrum she faces on a daily basis while she has been there.

Dr Morris is accompanied by four nurses and seven other dentists on the trip and admits to the imposing but highly gratifying work which has made her appreciate how fortunate people in the UK are to have access to some of the highest quality treatment practices.

She now admits to a holding a greater perspective regarding the magnitude of the problem in less developed countries and looks forward to returning.
