Yorkshire Dentist Discusses the NHS Reforms

A dentist from North Yorkshire has spoken candidly about the planned NHS reforms.

In an interview with The Guardian, dentist Jane Moore, from Patelely Bridge, offered a dentist’s opinion of the planned NHS reforms, which have been proposed by Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley.

Mr Lansley has met with tough criticism of his planned changes to the health system, but Dr Moore explained that most dentists are happy with the shake-up, especially as most believed that the last contract, which was introduced in 2006 by the Labour Government, had a very negative impact on NHS dental care.

Dr Moore said that she believes that a new contract can only be a good thing, as the current system, which involves Primary Care Trusts commissioning dental services has created a postcode lottery.

Dr Moore said that 80% of her work is NHS-based, but she specialises in sedation and treatment of nervous and phobic patients and these services are not available on the NHS.

Despite her positivity about changes to the dental contract, Dr Moore admitted that she was worried about other planned reforms and said that “unfettered privatisation” could be very damaging to the health service.
