A dentist from York who launched a new Smartphone app to encourage people to brush their teeth for the recommended time is delighted with the success of the project.

Ben Underwood, from Clifton Moor, created the Brush DJ app to help people to brush for the recommended time of two minutes; the app plays songs for two minutes at a time and you can choose your favourite song to play. The app, which was first launched last year, has become incredibly popular and has a number of 5 star reviews on Google and the Apple store. Ben also won the award for Best Dental Innovation at a prestigious awards ceremony in London recently.

Ben said the idea came out of the fact that dental students are told at university to encourage patients to brush to music as most songs are between 2 and 3 minutes long, which is the ideal time for brushing. Ben brushes his teeth to Robbie William’s hit Rock DJ and he has inspired many people to brush along to their favourite song.

Ben developed with app with AppWare in Wetherby and described it as a “Yorkshire project.

This year, Ben is working on a new website to show people how to brush their teeth, provide them with information about oral hygiene and encourage them to use the brushing app, which will soon be compatible with Blackberry and Windows phones.

The Brush DJ app allows the user to select their favourite songs and use a 2 minute timer; you can also set a reminder to brush twice a day and one to tell you when to replace your toothbrush.
