Work on a new dental school and hospital in Birmingham is set to begin next month, it has been confirmed.

The former BBC Pebble Mill site has been acquired and a new dental school and hospital will be constructed. The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry will be built on the Edgbaston site, providing local patients with state of the art facilities and dental students from the University of Birmingham with the very best learning facilities.

Work on the £34 million project is set to begin next month after partners involved in the venture reached a financial close. The new complex is being backed by the University of Birmingham, Birmingham Community NHS Healthcare Trust, Calthorpe Estates and Solihull LIFT.

Permission for the project was granted at the end of last year and building work is scheduled to begin by the end of next month with an anticipated opening date of autumn 2015 in time for the first intake of students to start using the facility at the end of September.

The new dental school and hospital form an important part of the Edgbaston Medical Quarter, which is set to put Birmingham on the map in terms of medical facilities, health services and dental and medical learning facilities.

Tracy Taylor, chief executive of the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, said that the hospital and school are symbolic of everything the healthcare trust wants to achieve.
