Worcester Dental Practice Launches New Stop Smoking Campaign

A dental practice in Worcester has become the first in the UK to launch a brand new stop smoking programme.

Northwick Manor Dental Practice is set to launch the Phoenix Stop Smoking Programme on March 12th, which is also National No Smoking Day.

Traditionally, programmes to help patients stop smoking are offered by GPs, but the Phoenix programmes will be offered by dental practices around the country.

Paul Elliott, owner of the practice, said that it was an honour for the practice to be chosen as the first to offer the programme. Dentists at the surgery have been advising patients to give up smoking for many years and now they are able to support them through the process of cutting down and quitting with the help of the Phoenix scheme.

The new programme has been coordinated by the National Smoking Cessation Service. Director of operations, Robert Brynin, said that it makes sense for dentists to get involved, as dentists are clearly concerned about the impact of smoking on oral health and are ideally positioned to give advice and support to patients. Mr Brynin added that many dentists had asked about providing practical help for their patients and the Phoenix programme is a means of doing this.

Anyone who wishes to find out more about the programme is advised to visit nationalstopsmokingcentres.org.uk. Patients in the Worcester area who would like more information about the programme at Northwick Manor are advised to contact the practice directly.

Smoking is associated with bad breath, staining and discolouration and an increased risk of gum disease, as well as being a major risk factor for oral cancer.
