Woodford House Dental Practice Offers Free Oral Cancer Screenings

The team from Woodford House Dental Practice in Woodford Green is offering free oral cancer checks this month as part of Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr Anuj Desai is keen to get people talking about mouth cancer, a form of cancer he believes is overlooked. The number of people affected by oral cancer has almost doubled in the last decade, yet many people are unaware of the symptoms and causes. This November, Dr Desai is eager to do his bit to support Mouth Cancer Awareness Month by offering free screening throughout November.

Dr Desai works closely with Macmillan and the cause is close to his heart, as many members of his family have battled cancer. With oral cancer, there’s a lack of awareness about warning signs, but also people tend to put off going to the dentist. Some people cite money as the reason, but many are also afraid of seeing the dentist. Routine check-ups are not just essential to keep diseases like gum disease and decay at bay. They also give dentists the chance to check for early warning signs of oral cancer.

At the moment, oral cancer survival statistics are stagnant and this is largely because many people are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Screening and regular dental appointments can help to improve the figures by enabling more people to receive treatment earlier.

As well as offering checks, Dr Desai will also be talking to patients about oral cancer and giving them information about risk factors and symptoms.
