A 36 year old woman is facing a £5,000 after pleading guilty to practicing dentistry without a licence.

Leanne Couzens, from Dundee, had been offering tooth whitening treatments to her clients at Dollface Beauty Salon. The treatments used bleaching chemicals such as peroxide, which can cause the inside of the mouth damage.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that the hygienist had let her membership on the British Dental Council register lapse, despite the fact that the salon’s website claimed the treatments were carried out by a ‘fully registered dentist’.

Couzens admitted the charge, which lies under the 1984 Dentists Act, and is due to return to court in October for sentencing.

Laura Bruce, fiscal depute, stated that the General Dental Council visited the salon for investigation on June 26th, 2013. During this visit, Couzens claimed that she was prepared to practice dentistry, and took one of the investigators to a dentist-style chair in a treatment room. She told the investigators that she had 12 years’ worth of experience as a dental hygienist and offered tooth whitening treatments.

Sentence for social reports background reports were deferred by Sheriff Tom Hughes, and Couzens is due back in court next month for sentencing.
