Dentists on the Wirral are aiming to reduce rates of decay among the region’s youngsters by hosting an open day to teach children how to brush their teeth properly.

Dentists from Moreton Dental Care on Hoylake Road are working with Wirral Community NHS Trust to encourage children to adopt and maintain good oral hygiene habits in a bid to prevent cases of tooth decay. The staff team will be running an open day at the practice on the 31st July to show kids how to brush properly, answer their questions about oral hygiene and chat to them about why oral health is so important.

The open day is available to everyone and children will be able to participate in a range of fun and educational activities and games. The event will run from 9am until 1pm. As well as face painting, quizzes and prize draws, there will also be a toothbrush exchange where kids can swap their old brushes for new ones. Al E Gator, a friendly puppet, will also be on hand to chat to the children about cleaning their teeth.

The event information has been announced just days after it was revealed in the national press that almost 500 kids are admitted to hospital for dental treatment every week in the UK. The latest figures from the NHS show that thousands of children are undergoing treatment under general anaesthetic for decay, which is a preventable illness.

Dr Paul Sherrard, principal dentist at the practice, said that the aim of the open day is to encourage kids to take an interest in oral health and to make teeth cleaning fun.
