Widow Urges People to have Check-up after her Husband Dies from Cancer

Linda Ford, a widow from Oldmeldrum in the North East of England, has urged people to attend regular dental check-ups after her husband, George, died from cancer which was first discovered by his dentist.

George, who was just 40 when he died, was first diagnosed with cancer after visiting his dentist who spotted warning signs and referred him to hospital for further tests. Specialists told George that he had a tumour underneath his tongue.

Her husband endured a long battle with the deadly disease, but eventually lost his fight after undergoing major surgery to remove three quarters of his tongue and courses of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Linda urged members of the public not to overlook the importance of going to the dentist on a regular basis. A check-up lasts just a few minutes but it could potentially be the difference between life and death, with dentists in an ideal position to spot the early warning signs of common problems.

Early diagnosis increases the chance of survival significantly, and dentists recommend check-ups every six to twelve months.
