Sample News Big

Most people are aware of the oral health benefits of brushing on a regular basis, but experts are finding an increasingly strong link between oral health and general health, meaning that spending quality time brushing your teeth is more important than ever.

Experts have discovered a link between oral health diseases, particularly gum disease, an a host of medical conditions, some of which can be extremely serious and even life-threatening and are urging people to make sure that they keep an eye on their mouth and attend regular dental check-ups.

As a result of a growing body of evidence to support a connection between oral and general health, dentists are in an ideal position to spot the signs of a number of different illnesses, from common oral health problems to anaemia and heart disease. Dentists are often in a better position than GPs because patients visit on a regular basis for routine appointments, rather than waiting until they notice symptoms or feel ill.

Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association, said that it was extremely important to take steps to prevent gum disease, as studies have revealed that it can contribute to an increased risk of a host of other health problems. The good news is that most cases of gum disease can be prevented by sticking to a good oral hygiene routine, avoiding sugary foods and attending regular dental examinations.

Research studies, which have been conducted all over the world, have revealed a relationship between gum disease and a plethora of other health conditions, including strokes and heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease and osteoporosis.
