Western Isles MSP calls for U-turn on proposed dental hub

Western Isles MSP, Alasdair Allan has called for a U-turn on a proposed dental hub. Dr Allan has contacted NHS Western Isles and the chief executives at Comhairle nan Eilean Sar to encourage them to revise plans to open a single hub, which would serve several islands.

Recently, proposals for a change in dental provision were discussed at a meeting with the Western Isles Integrated Joint Board and members were divided when it came to choosing between the proposed hub and a plan to design a system that would involve three separate sites. The latter was put forward by councillor Paul Steele. Health executives will now make a decision about how dental services will be provided to local residents going forward.

Dr Allan said that he had appealed for plans to be revised several times on behalf of the residents of Uist, the vast majority of whom are very anxious about the idea of the dental hub. Dr Allan believes that ignoring the wishes of the people would not only affect the efficacy of the dental service, but also call into question the reputation of the relevant health boards.

Dr Allan stressed that many people had contacted him to share their views on a single hub, with most agreeing that a single site would represent a “step backwards” for the island. In light of the vehemence of the protests, Dr Allan has now written to the parties involved to make the position of the residents clear and appeal for alternative options to be considered.
