Children fromWeltonPrimary School, near Hull, were all smiles last week after receiving a visit from a local dental hygienist.

Anushka McCann, from Brough Dental Studios in Welton Road, visited the school to talk to children about oral hygiene as part of National Smile Month. Anushka spent time with 6 and 7 year olds, talking to them about brushing their teeth and showing them how to brush properly. She also answered questions from the children and demonstrated good brushing techniques using a giant toothbrush and large model mouth.

Anushka was accompanied by a dental nurse and the session was fun and interactive, as well as educational. The children were encouraged to get involved, answering questions about brushing and healthy eating and they really enjoyed the session.

Business manager, Jayne Patrick, said that the school had “jumped at the chance” when the practice offered to come and visit as part of National Smile Month and added that the session had been a great success.

Ms Patrick said that the children had learned a lot but they also had great fun.

Oral health should be a priority for children, but figures show that rates of decay are high, with four out of ten children in the region showing signs of dental problems.

National Smile Month is a campaign run by the British Dental Health Foundation. It will run until 20th June with the main aim of helping thousands to take good care of their teeth and gums. Brushing the teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, visiting the dentist every 6 months for a check-up and avoiding sugary foods, especially between meals is a great way to maintain good oral health.
