Welsh schoolchildren celebrate oral health

Sample News Big

Schoolchildren across Wales are taking part in events and activities to celebrate the launch of a new national campaign to reduce the rate of tooth decay amongst children.

The Designed To Smile campaign has been launched to teach children about oral hygiene and dental health with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of children with decay in Wales.

The scheme will target children aged between three and seven years old. Community health teams and dental professionals will visit schools throughout the country to teach children about the importance of good oral health and show them how to brush their teeth properly; the teams will use large stuffed toys and popular characters to demonstrate how to brush teeth properly and encourage children to practice with the toys and talk to each other about teeth cleaning.

The visits are designed to be fun and entertaining to ensure that children get involved in the activities and connect oral hygiene with having fun; children are encouraged to participate in the games and practical sessions and have fun with their friends whilst they learn.

The community health teams will also provide children with oral hygiene products to ensure they have the equipment they need to take care of their teeth and gums.

The scheme will involve 84 schools and will hopefully make a huge difference to oral health figures in the future.
