Dentists in Wales are set to get a bigger pay increase than their counterparts in England and Northern Ireland. A new pay deal, which has been confirmed by ministers in Wales, means that dentists in Wales will see their salaries increase by more than colleagues in other parts of the UK.

Vaughan Gething, Welsh health secretary, confirmed that ministers are willing to accept recommendations based on pay reviews. The new pay deal will increase salaries for general dental practitioners by 2 percent. The increase will be backdated to April 2018. Mr Gething stated that the rise “recognises the value and dedication of hardworking doctors and dentists and their key contribution to the NHS in Wales.” The move to increase pay for dentists and doctors has been backed by medical and dental organisations in Wales.

Studies recently showed that dentists in Northern Ireland have the lowest earnings in the UK, with figures suggesting that dentists have seen their pay decrease in real terms by over 4 percent in the last decade.

In England, the government revealed pay increases of between 1.5% and 3% for dentists, GPs and speciality doctors. Last month, Scottish ministers announced a raise of 3% for salaried dentists with earnings under £80,000.
