Welsh Dentist Supports Displaced Refugees After Calais ‘Jungle Camp’ Closure

A dentist from Cwmbran, Wales, has flown to France to provide support for refugees who have been displaced as a result of the closure of the Calais ‘jungle camp’.

23 year old Ali Al Hassan left Wales last week after hearing about the clearance of the camp, which has become known as The Jungle. Thousands of people have been asked to leave the area over the course of the last two weeks, with many unsure of what the future holds. French and UK ministers are working to relocate migrants. The first group of child migrants with links to families in the UK arrived last week and French ministers have taken truckloads of refugees to sites across the country.

Mr Al Hassan decided to volunteer to provide dental treatment and assistance for refugees after hearing about opportunities to help out in Calais from a friend who had visited the site previously said that he was planning to return and help out again.

Speaking about the decision, Mr Al Hassan explained that it seemed like a good idea to go out there and make use of his skills to help people in need. Many have faced years of hardship, and they have gone without even the most basic health and dental care.

Mr Al Hassan was planning to carry out emergency dental checks. He will also be part of a team of volunteers handing out warm clothes and blankets to help those who are sleeping rough.
