A dental student in her fourth year at Cardiff University has been called up to represent the Welsh hockey team at the Commonwealth Games after a late injury forced another player to withdraw.

Sophie Clayton, 20, has now joined the squad in Glasgow after her team mate, Eloise Laity, pulled out with injury. The student from Newport has always dreamed of representing her country at an international event and she is extremely excited to be part of the games.

Sophie, who is known as the Claytonator, by her friends and team mates, is in her fourth year at Cardiff University and will be working towards her final exams in the coming year before graduating and qualifying as a dentist. She represented Wales at under 18 level and was desperate to get into the first X1.

Head coach of the Welsh women’s hockey team, Amanda Partington, said that everyone was hugely disappointed for Eloise and wished her a speedy recovery. The team is now looking forward to welcoming Sophie and hopefully putting in a number of good performances in the coming weeks.
