A dental practice in Warrington has teamed up with a local women’s rugby club to provide free, custom-made mouth guards.

Clayton and Scott Dental Surgery will kit the Widnes Vikings Ladies team out with bespoke mouth guards for their upcoming matches. One of the practice dentists, Stephen Porter, decided to make the generous gesture with the blessing of the owners, as his daughter, Rachael, plays for the team. In total, the dentists will be creating around 30 mouth guards, providing protection for the entire squad.

Talking about the move, Stephen said that his daughter, who is now 20, has been playing rugby since she was 8 years old. For the last few years, Rachael has been pestering her dad to help out, and he wanted to lend his support. The club is responsible for funding the running costs, and paying for 30 bespoke mouth guards would be a considerable outgoing for the team.

Stephen’s colleague, Katie Morris, said the partnership was a “great initiative” that would make a really positive impact on the local community at the same time as protecting the players’ smiles.

Each custom-designed mouth guard, which is crafted by experienced dental technicians, would usually cost around £65.
