A survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation has revealed that around 70 percent of people believe that a smile signifies success.

The survey was carried out in conjunction with National Smile Month, which runs from the 16th May to the 16th June. More than half of us judge a person by their smile, according to the questionnaire, meaning that we place a lot of importance on the way a person looks and interacts with us when we first meet them.

The recent television debates have enabled the public to see the election candidates in a new light; this is the first time party leaders have undertaken television debates and spent such a long time in front of the cameras for all at home to analyse the way they look, as well as mulling over what they say.

According to the survey, David Cameron came out top in the smile stakes, with 38 percent of people preferring his smile to the other candidates; Nick Clegg came in third place with 28 percent of the vote and Gordon Brown took second with 33 percent.

This survey, along with similar surveys which have been completed in the past, reveal the important of a healthy looking smile in terms of creating positive first impressions and giving off an air of confidence and contentment. To enjoy a healthy looking, bright smile, it is important to brush the teeth twice a day, floss and rinse with mouthwash on a daily basis and visit the dentist frequently. Diet can also play a huge part; eating a healthy and balanced diet will contribute to good oral health as well as promoting good general health and protecting against illness and infection.
