A study claims that vitamin D can help to reduce the risk of children developing dental cavities.

The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Washington shows that vitamin D can help to prevent cavities in children. The study consisted of 24 separate clinical trials, which were carried out in different countries between the 1920’s and 1980’s; trials involved more than 3,000 children aged between 2 and 16 years old living in the UK, New Zealand, Austria, Canada, Sweden and the USA.

The review of the clinical trials suggested that vitamin D could reduce the risk of cavities by up to 50 per cent.

Vitamin D has long been linked to the health and strength of bones and this latest study shows that there could also be a link between vitamin D and good oral health.

The study’s findings have been welcomed by The American Medical Association and the US National Research Council; however, the American Dental Association has rejected the results of the study.
