UWE Bristol Running Unusual Oral Malodour Course

The University of the West of England, Bristol, is running an unusual course on oral malodour to help dentists deal with one of the most common complaints from dental patients, bad breath.

Professor John Greenman runs the course on oral malodour with Dr Saliha Saad, a trained malodour specialist. The course is designed to educate dentists about the causes of oral malodour based on the actual smell; according to the organisers, and breath is the third most common reason for visiting the dentist but dentists are not trained to determine the cause of bad breath by using their own sense of smell.

Greenman and Saad state that bad breath is caused by microbes in the mouth or metabolism; in 80 percent of cases, bad breath is associated with microbes in the mouth and is not related to medical conditions affecting other parts of the body. Bd breath is most commonly associated with microbes on the tongue and decay and it is possible for dentists to use their own sense of smell to confirm this diagnosis; according to the organisers of the course, a “trained nose” can identify the cause of bad breath and therefore determine the most appropriate treatment course.

The course is designed for dentists, dental hygienists, technicians and dental nurses and the aim is to teach practitioners how to differentiate between the different groups of bad breath components.

Dr Saad said that bad breath is a very common patient complaint; however, most dentists are not trained to deal with the problem effectively. This course enables them to learn how to identify different causes of bad breath using their own sense of smell, which will speed up the diagnosis time and enable quick and more effective treatment
