Utah man pleads guilty to illegal dentistry

A Utah man has admitted practising dentistry illegally in the local Hispanic communities.

Raul Garay, from American Fork, pleaded guilty to two charges of practicing dentistry without a licence and one charge of illegally dispensing prescriptions.

The 57-year-old was sentenced to 36 months probation by Judge Steven Hansen. These charges could be reduced to misdemeanours if the probation period is completed, enabling Garay earn to a legal dentistry license.

Richard Gale, Garay’s attorney, said that his client would like to work in dentistry in the future.

Garay learnt his trade as a dentist in El Salvador, where his father owned a practice.

Police reports suggested that Garay had advertised his dentistry services in local Hispanic markets and that a dental chair, drills, hoses and rusted tools were found in his home.

He said he was sorry for what had happened and that he had just wanted to help people.

Garay will also serve 240 hours of community service.
