Emergency dental services could be relocated when the current contract comes to an end in March, urgent care is currently provided by Southern Health NHS Trust at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, but the service is under threat.

The contract is due to expire at the end of March and health bosses have confirmed that it will not be renewed, meaning that urgent dental care services could be moved from the Queen Alexandra Hospital.

Marilyn Chapman, a patient from Lee-on-the-Solent, said that the news was very worrying and said that she visited the hospital when she was suffering from severe pain caused by an abscess and described it as a very “valuable service.” Ms Chapman said that the hospital is an ideal location for the service because it is easy for people to get to.

Natalie Jones, head of dental services commissioning and contracting at Primary Care Trust Ship, the current commissioner for the contract, confirmed that the current contract will run out on the 31st March, but emergency care provision will not cease and the PCT is currently working to find an alternative providers, which will include expanded out of hours provision at dental practices around the city and extended opening hours.

Jones added that the PCT is determining exact locations and information about the new services will be made available to the public as soon as possible. The PCT is not able to reveal the name of the provider as the contract has not yet been signed.
