The American Dental Association (ADA) is hosting an upcoming Conference on workforce topics at their head office in Chicago on 18 July 2010 as a response to an ADA House resolution adopted last year (31H-2009). The resolution impressed that each state has jurisdiction for dental workforce needs, and that the relevant state ADA constituent dental society is responsible for advising new members of a dental team.

Attendees by invitation-only include ADA congregation of trustees and selected ADA council representatives, the committee on dentistry practice’s subcommittee relating to issues in the workplace, and three members from each dental society component.

The goal of the gathering is not to debate ADA policies, the remit of the House of Delegates, but to closely review different workforce models under consideration in dentistry. ADA President, Dr. Tankersley stated that state dentistry associations varied on their ideals of dentistry worker models, and that the gathering’s aim is to promote open discussion relating to the issue.

Through information-based facilitation, the ADA hopes to promote improved comprehension of district dissimilarities and viewpoints on workforce models and issues. Webinars are included before and following the gathering for invitees to discuss records of the dentistry unit and to examine workforce arrangements that foundationally underlie the dental profession and patient care. The purpose is also to learn about dental practice across state boundaries, and the role of the dentist as team leader in directing oral health care. Findings will also be presented to the House of Delegates that meets in Orlando during October 2010.
