The University of Sheffield has honoured an inspirational student who has devoted his time at university to improving the experience of those around him and enriching the lives of people in the local community.

Kieran Bhakta graduated from the university’s dental school on the 20th July. He was awarded the prestigious Chancellor’s Medal in recognition of his commitment to his studies and efforts to enhance the student experience for others at the university. During his time at the university, Kieran supported and inspired his fellow students as President of the Sheffield University Dental Students’ Society. He also made a difference in the wider community by putting a huge amount of effort into raising awareness of mouth cancer and supporting the Ben Walton Trust.

During his five years at the university, Kieran organised and participated in a series of events designed to raise the charity’s profile and generate much needed financial support. He also played an important role on university open days, where he would show people around, answer questions and provide insight into day to day life as a Sheffield student.

Kieran said he was completely shocked when he heard the news that he would be receiving the Chancellor’s Medal and described it as a real honour. He went on to say he has thoroughly enjoyed the last five years at this “amazing university” and will miss the staff, student life and his many friends.

Dean of the dental school, Professor Paul Speight, described Kieran as a “fine example of why the dental school is so proud of its students”.  He described Kieran as a “model student” who gave everything to his studies, extra-curricular activities and responsibilities.

Kieran is now in esteemed company, with previous winners of the award including Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill.
